Naoki Terao Origami

Home / About

I am Naoki Terao, I have been folding origamis since I was 5 years old. My father told me one day that there are artists who fold paper to make animals. I tried and it was great fun. That was when my journey started. I looked up some models on the internet and found the Ancient Dragon by Satoshi Kamiya. I was fascinated and immediately wanted to fold it. While we were living in California, we went several times to a festival where Charles Esseltine was giving some origami lessons. He was also exhibiting some complex origamis that I was seeing for the first time. Charlie told me that the Ancient Dragon was very very very very very very very difficult.

I finally found Satoshi Kamiya's first book in a Japanese bookstore in our neighborhood. I was so happy that I had finished folding all the models of the book by the time I was ten, including the Ancient Dragon.

Around the same time, my family moved to Belgium. My father discovered that there is an origami convention in France, in Lyon. We went for the first time in 2015. There, I discovered new types of paper: shadow fold, tissue foil, biotope, elephant hide. Before, I was only using kami, kraft and giftwrapping paper. I also discovered tessellations.

We also met other Belgians and we created a small club with them. We subscribed to the French forum, Pliage de Papier. That is where I learned how to decrypt CPs. In 2016, I took part for the first time in the International Origami Internet Olympiad (IOIO). The next two years, I placed 20th and was the first among Belgians.

I created my first model when I was 9 years old. It was a dragon. But it has been since 2017 that I have found the real fun of creating origamis.

During all these years, I have developed the ability to fold in my head and to decrypt CPs. I have now been folding for 11 years.
